Matcha Sea Salt Fries

Crispy, golden-brown shoestring matcha sea salt fries with a little kick of heat.

Fries are one of the tastiest indulgences. Who doesn’t love to snack on delicious, golden-brown, crispy fries?

Here we present an Asian version of the classic fry, complete with sriracha ketchup and a superfood kick of matcha sea salt. Matcha’s subtle, veggie-ish flavor adds an earthy element to these matcha sea salt fries that balances out the heat of the cayenne very well.

In addition to flavor, the matcha powder also brings plenty of health benefits to these fries, as it is a superfood that packs a lot of punch. Matcha powder helps protect your body against:

…free radicals, which attack your blood cells and can lead to cancer.

…the build-up of toxic protein fragments in your brain, which can lead to Alzheimer’s disease.

…stunted blood flow and “frustrated” arteries, which can cause stroke and heart attack.

…chemical toxins and heavy metals in your body.

So the matcha green tea powder does quite a lot for your body!

If you’re not a huge fan of spicy heat, simply experiment with the amounts of cayenne and sriracha to your liking. These matcha sea salt fries make a perfect afternoon snack, or a great side to a meal.

Matcha Sea Salt Fries with Sriracha Ketchup Recipe
What you’ll need:
  • Mandoline with julienne attachment or a chef’s knife
  • A large pot for frying
  • A small bowl
  • Baking sheet
  • Tongs
  • A thermometer for oil
  • Paper towels
    Ingredients

    (for the shoestring fries)

  • 1 medium russet potato (this will equal one serving of fries)
  • Peanut oil for frying
  • (for the Matcha sea salt*)

  • 1 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons Epic Matcha green tea powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • *Yields enough salt for 4–6 servings of fries

    (for the sriracha ketchup)

  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • A small squirt of sriracha
    Directions
  1. Line a baking sheet with paper towels.
  2. Line a baking sheet with paper towels.
  3. Using a mandoline or chef’s knife, cut potato(es) lengthwise, into skinny shoestring fries, with a thickness of about 1/8 inch, as identically as possible.
  4. After the potato is cut, dry the potato pieces with a paper towel.
  5. In a small bowl, mix together the matcha powder, salt, and cayenne pepper.
  6. Pour the oil into a large frying pot so that it goes up the sides about 1 inch to-1 1/2 inch.
  7. Heat the oil to a temperature of 400ºF. When the oil hits 400 degrees, place half of the uncooked potato sticks into the pot…gently!
  8. Cook for 1 minute, then remove the pieces with tongs onto the paper towel-lined baking sheet.
  9. Bring oil temperature back to 400 degrees, and repeat the process with the other half of the uncooked potato sticks. Your potato sticks should be cooked, but not yet crisp.
  10. With all the potato pieces now cooked, bring the oil temperature back to 400 degrees once again.
  11. Place half of the potato sticks into the hot oil, and cook for about a minute (or until golden brown).
  12. Remove potato sticks and place them on the paper towel-lined baking sheet, using new paper towels as necessary.
  13. Bring the oil temperature back up to 400 degrees, then repeat this process with the other half of the potato pieces, removing after a minute when fries become golden brown.
  14. After the fries have blotted on the paper towels, sprinkle the fries with the matcha salt.
  15. In another small bowl, mix together the ketchup and the sriracha.
  16. Serve fries hot with spicy ketchup, and enjoy!

Yield One potato equals one serving
